Speculatief is a Dutch magazine of translated science fiction and fantasy. It publishes short stories, poetry and audio fiction. Issues are published quarterly and available on our website, for purchase in ebook format.

If you are a Hugo, Nebula, Locus or Nebula-nominated author, or you have been personally contacted by one of our editors, feel free to contact us anyway. The same counts for Rhysling and Dwarf Star-winning authors.

Fiction guidelines
Word limit: | 1000 - 7000 words |

Genres: | Science fiction, fantasy and SF-themed horror reprints (previously unreleased in Dutch) We have a strong preference for short stories by award-winning authors. |
Language: | English / Dutch (We accept stories from all over the world. Translations are welcomed) |
Rights: | We claim the non-exclusive world Dutch electronic rights (text and audio) and non-exclusive anthology rights for one potential anthology ("Speculatief Magazine: Year x"). We don't claim any English rights. You also get the rights for the translated work, to do with as you please. |
You are free to submit your story for its English rights to other magazines. You are free to sell the translated work again to other markets. We are especially looking for award-winning short stories, preferably audio-friendly.

Fiction Submission Process
Please email us submissions. Send an email to contact@speculatief.be with the subject SUBMISSION.
Please include the following information in your e-mail:
- Name
- Pronouns
- Story title
- Word count
- Genre
- A file containing your story (preferably .doc, .docx or .rtf)
All submissions will receive personal responses. If you believe your submission has been forgotten, feel free to query us at contact@speculatief.be.
Confidentiality
An author’s personal information (name, address, email, phone, or secret idenity) will not be shared with anyone, unless compelled by law.
Art guidelines
The cover for each issue of Speculatief is used across all editions (online, ebook, digital subscription, and print) of the magazine. Our rights are restricted to those covers for that specific issue. All other rights remain with the artist. Payment is $30. The artist’s bio and link to their online portfolio will be included in the issue featuring their art.
What kind of art we’re looking for
- Art reminiscent of the big English-language magazines (Clarkesworld, Uncanny Magazine, Lightspeed, …)
- Color artwork is preferred.
- Digital or traditional 2D paintings are preferred. No photography.
- Artwork must be available in a 300dpi .tif or other high-resolution format.
- Artwork must be friendly to re-sizing.
Art submission process
Artists interested in submitting their work for consideration should send the URL of their online gallery or portfolio to contact@speculatief.be. Feel free to attach any images you specifically want to highlight. We will get in touch with you if we’re interested in licensing a particular piece as a cover.
